any tips for a nikon D60 ?
i am going to buy one this weekend and i was wondering if anyone had any tips? i am a first time SLR user and i hurd this was good for begenners. it comes with the 3x18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 but when i learn a little more on it i will get the 50mm 1.8 AIS lens.... i found it for 536.39 and the sale ends this weekend
The Nikon D60 is a great camera and the kit lens will get you started nicely.
The following is what you should consider budgeting for right at the start:
1) Camera
2) Lens(es) appropriate for what you want to shoot
3) Memory card(s)
4) Carrying case/pouch/or bag with room to grow
Then the following things you will want to consider depending on how you plan to use your camera:
5) Tripod (for night shots, very clear landscape shots, panoramic stitches, or using a long telephoto zoom)
6) Polariser filter (this will give more saturated colours and less glare in shots taken outdoors under bright sun)
7) An extra battery is nice if you are out somewhere and don't want to miss an opportunity for a shot
Additional lamp lighting or flash of some sort is usually required for taking professional looking portraiture
The 50 f/1.8 is a good lens for you if you plan to be doing portraiture from fairly close range (within 15 feet). After time you will eventually want to start lighting those people to get clearer, crisper shots.
If you have interests in any other kinds of photography, like anything from a distance with a telephoto zoom, or something really tiny and close up with a macro lens... you will have to look at some other specialized lenses.
I found starting off with my camera, I tended to take more shots of cityscapes and landscapes to start. They are patient models who didn't make me feel self-conscious about my lack of photography knowledge when starting out. You kit lens can take some decent landscape shots; but if you live in a city and want to take shots of buildings where the option to back up farther to get a whole building in the shot is not available, you'd need a wide-angle lens for that task. My favourite is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. It is available for both Canon and Nikon. It can get a very wide angle of view without producing fisheye distortion.
