Alien Bees 3
Is an SB600 flash good enough for off-camera?

I have a Nikon D60 with an SB600 speedlight. I was thinking of buying a remote, stand, and umbrella for it to use it off-camera. Is it worth it? Can the SB600 provide enough light or should I shell out the money for an Alien Bees B800? This is just something I do in my spare time, not professional.

The SB600 is a pretty decent flash. It will definitely work off camera. Using an umbrella you will lose some light - maybe a stop or so = but if you are talking about a controlled setting, like a portrait where the umbrella will only be a few feet from the subject, it will work fine.

The B800 has a lot more power. You rarely use it at full power, but using it at half or quarter power means that the power is re-cycling more quickly for the next shot. If you want to use a big softbox, you would want to go with the AB.

If you haven't checked out strobist yet, you should give it a read. They are all about off camera flash. http://www.strobist.com
