Angle Fisheye
What's a good (as wide as possible but not fisheye) wide-angle canon ef lens?
Ive got the full frame 5d so Im looking at EF as opposed to EF-S. I really like and want to achieve the wide angle distortion effect
Ive seen the 14mm L lens but cant really afford £1500. I was wondering if there was a slightly cheaper EF alternative.
It really depends on the camera.
For the cameras that can take EF-S lenses, there is the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. Tokina, Tamron, and Sigma also make lenses that are really wide that work on all the Canon DSLRs (though they might vignette on full frame and 1.3x cameras). The Canon 10-22mm is the lens to get for these cameras. It's got great image quality.
For a true EF lens the widest is the 14mm f/2.8L. I've shot with this lens a couple of times. I can't exactly say that it is really worth it, but if you really need it, that's the lens to get. Then there is the 15mm f/2.8 fisheye, but you didn't want a fisheye. I have the 16-35mm f/2.8L II as my wide angle for my full frame and 1.3x cameras. It replaced my 17-40mm f/4L. Both the 16-35mm and 17-40mm are great lenses. The 17-40mm is the best value for a landscape shooter. If I didn't also need the f/2.8 for indoor shots, I'd have kept the 17-40mm and not bought the 16-35mm.
Overall, the best value for a wide angle EF lens, is the 17-40mm f/4L. It's got great image quality and doesn't cost that much.
I had mentioned third party lenses earlier. I usually avoid them. While they may be cheaper and have good glass, they don't always work when you upgrade bodies later on. Sigma seems to have the most quality control problems. Tamron lenses are a little better and Tokina lenses are probably the best of the third parties. There are other third parties, but I'd usually consider a Sigma before them. (Zeiss recently announced a mount that will work with Canon. Zeiss optics are superb, but I don't believe they've announced an ultra-wide angle in the ZE mount yet.)
