How do I put my lens back together?
I just took my lens apart to fix it. It is a Nikkor DX 18-55 mm zoom. It wasn't under warranty, so I figured I had nothing to lose. Everything looks fine, nothing bent or broken, but I can't get the aperature houseing back into the lens casing. There is a plastic spiral, and then two long metal runners that extend down towards the lens at an angle and slightly cocked in toward the center of the housing. I can't get the aperature housing to slide along these. Is there somewhere on the internet that has a picture?
A toaster would be a poor choice of items to repair.
If you were to repair it & the house burned down the insurance company will refuse to pay a single penny.
You have nothing to lose but time & will gain wisdom through your experience.
In this case you will need to study the parts, visualize & use your imagination about how these parts fit & move together.
I too have forgotten how something came apart 30 min laster lol. Now I take digital pics of my tear downs.
The moving parts may have thin white grease on them dont remove it. CPU thermal grease is the closest thin grease I've found for electronics gears ect.
I considered by many friends to be a fix it DIY specialist with many successful repairs.
Even a simple electric drill has a few parts that seem to pop or jump out just when you are about to put the case back together.
About 2 - 4 attempts tired eyes & a stiff neck, some foul words & you might get it together.
Dont give up until youre really ready & youe 100% positive you know its junk.
Once its junk have fun go exploring save those mini electronics screws you will never find in any hardware store on earth (maybe china) lol
In reality I too have failed to repair a few items that are too delicate to mess with.
