Trying to think of diy home studio backdrops/backgrounds aside from the black or white backdrop...?
For infants or small children, I've been thinking about using a piece of plywood and covering it with wrapping paper to give off kind of like a wallpaper type look. But it would be really inexpensive to use and change as the theme fits. And as long the seems match up I think it might look alright??? Any ideas on this or other suggestions????

You don't want the background to compete for attention with the subject, so you want to keep colours or patterns muted.
Why not use swatches of cloth which you could staple to a ply frame (more lightweight than a solid piece) or drape on a backdrop stand (much more portable as they can be broken down & put away). The material can be left loose on the crosspiece for a 'curtain' effect, or clamped to the support stands for a smooth effect.
You might want to consider gelling your lights too if you want a soft colour to the b/g, like this;
