There are a couple of ways to solve this. One way:
The base-paths on a softball "diamond" actually make a square. In this case a square with each side equal to 60 feet. From home plate to second base is one of the diagonals of the square. You can also think of the diagonal as being the hypotenuse of a right triangle with the other sides having length 60. Use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve:
Let d be the distance from home plate to second base.
60^2 + 60^2 = d^2
3600 + 3600 = d^2
7200 = d^2
84.853 = d
