How close can I take a carbon fibre camera pole to a railway overhead cable?
I was taking pictures in difficult weather conditions, strong wind, intermittent torrential showers, next to the Helensburgh to Glasgow line last week, the overhead power is 25KV. I was worried that my pole might allow an arking effect to occur despite being about 15 feet from the railway line.In the end I left the pole about 30 feet away from me and just took my photos with no extra support.
I should add I am worried about being electrocouted, nothing else.
Mickyd you may not have noticed, but UK railways have a thing called a fence along the side of them. provided you don`t cross the fence you can go as close to the railway line as you like.
Indeed, you are very wise. You cannot rely on the pole being an insulator, since if the surface is even slightly damp ("torrential showers", you said!), current can pass along the surface of the pole. I personally wouldn't raise the end of the pole much above my head height, if anywhere near the line.
