What kind of camera is excellent for photography?
I would like to start taking pictures at a more advanced level, but I know that it all starts with the camera. Please provide links.
If you want to jump right into digital photography, get a DSLR. I recommend a Nikon because their lenses are interchangeable with lenses from their manual SLRs, which are much cheaper. Also, the Nikon kit lenses have a much more shallow depth of field, which is a nice feature for portraiture.

You will also want to invest in some kind of digital photo editing software. Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard, but it's very expensive. Try something free like GIMP or Paint.net to start out. Get yourself a book on the basics of digital photography, or enroll in an Intro to Digital Photography course. It will be a great help.
