I use a Nikon D50 w/ a stroboframe, sync cord and SB600 flash. I have a situation where I can not have my flash go off but when I turn the flash off the camera slows so much that the picture turns out bad. What settings do I need to change to beable to still take a great picture with my flash off??? I need help!!!
If there is not sufficient light to get a good photo, you will have to make some compromises. Your goal is to get the fastest possible shutter speed attainable with the available light, even though some other factors may need to be sacrificed.
Set the camera for aperture priority, and set the aperture to the widest possible opening (smallest f number). Set the sensitivity (ISO) to the maximum, which for that camera is 1600, I believe.
The wide aperture brings in the most light possible, and the high sensitivity (ISO) lets the camera make the best use of the light it can get. These settings allow the shutter speed to be faster to stop the motion, whether from a moving subject, or from camera shake.
The sacrifices are 1) the wide opening will give a narrow depth of field, requiring that the focus be set exactly on the portion of the subject that is most important, and 2) the high ISO will cause more noise (blotches or speckles) in the photo.
If you have a photo processing program such as Photoshop, you can use a noise reducing filter (such as Noise Ninga or NeatImage to help manage the noise.
