Can a digital camera be powered by a usb power supply, or is the usb port just for downloading pictures?
I'm curious if a USB power supply such as come with GPS and cellphones can power digital cameras and other USB equipped devices that come with their own power supplies. I know the USB power supply provides 500 milliamps at 5 volts, and this would be different than the power supplied by the normal power supplies for my Sony (4.2 volts @ 1.5 amps) and Canon digital cameras (7.2 volts @2.7 amps).
And finally, will I blow something out if I plug a USB power supply in?

I doubt you will blow something as it is meant to recieve voltage from the pc. but whether it charges is determined by the makers, have you tried looking up power supply adapters for your camera?
If it powers from a different port, i would only use that one.
Supplying 5 volts with 3 amps to something meant to handle .5 amps can do funny things.
People could answer better if you told us what camera.
