Is UV coating on glasses lens really necessary if you have already have cataract implants?
The implants that are being used now are UV protective. They do an excellent job of protecting the retina from the effects of UV radiation. Also, since the patient no longer has a natural lens it is no longer important to block UV light for the purpose of slowing the progress of cataracts. The implanted lens cannot cloud due to UV exposure.
Since the implanted lens is positioned posterior to the iris,though, (the same position as the natural lens) it is unable to protect the iris and the cornea from exposure to UV radiation. There is some evidence that the development of a pterygium of the cornea may be related to UV exposure. So, yes, implanted lenses do protect the posterior portions of the eye from UV exposure. But they do not protect any ocular structures anterior to the implanted lens. As inexpensive as UV coatings are I would recommend going ahead and having the protection placed in any pair of eyeglasses. Hope this helped.
