Is the color film you see in movies such as The Wizard of Oz, thicker than the colors of the actual items?
When I watch The Wizard of Oz, it always makes me wonder if Technicolor just made things look thicker in color. I mean I have seen this with other color films too all the way up until the 1960s and 1970s.
I don't know too much about the technical side of companies such as Technicolor and how the early days of color film worked. Could someone explain it or direct me to a website that goes in depth about it?
By thicker do you mean like "richer"? I think it's a little of both. The filmmakers especially in the Wizard of Oz used props that were extra bright in shades they knew would the film would capture, so the finished film looks "saturated". Even in black and white film, the actresses would wear brown lipstick, for example, because it read better onscreen
This was great for musicals and fantasies, but not so good for realism, so this got toned down later on.
The film stock itself, at least in the late 40s, is referred to as three-strip Technicolor. It's fairly complicated, I don't really understand it myself. But this site goes into crazy detail about it.
