External Flash for Nikon D40?
Hi:
I'm a novice at using DSLR cameras, but have been slowly working on it!
I'd like to get an external flash for my Nikon D40, but not yet ready to spend too much $$. Would love to get the SB600, but its too pricey for me night now. I just want to be able to practice and get better at photography.
What's a good, inexpensive external flash that is compatible with the D40? I was looking at the Rokinon iTTL AF Dedicated Flash for Nikon which is selling for approx $60. Does anyone have any reviews on this brand? I was also looking at the brand Opteka.
Any advice would be great!
The Nikon CLS system on higher end cameras is not an option, but that's not the be-all and end-all anyway - not very reliable over distance or in bright light outdoors. Learning to use your flash & camera in manual settings will be better in the long run. The TTL systems are not foolproof!
I'd strongly recommend something like the Yongnuo 460-MkII (£40) available on eBay. Pair it with a set of Yongnuo RF-602 triggers (1x trigger + 1x receiver, £27) on eBay and you'd be good to go for wireless off camera flash. The RF-602's have good range & reliability. Chuck in a 5-in-1 reflector (£8) and you've got a good basis there of a one strobe system
Add to the system as you go along - light stands can be had cheaply (£12 each) and a brolly bracket (to attach your flash to a light stand) is around £14. Cheap umbrella (white shoot thru) will set you back about £15.
You have a real advantage using the D40 - it can sync with your flash up to about 1/1000 or higher because it has an electronic shutter (most cameras are limited to max sync speed of 1/250 or thereabouts). This is great for shooting outdoors & killing the ambient - you can turn day into night & control the light even outdoors on a sunny day!
