Film Iso

For film ISO 100 or 50 what are the best light conditions? Indoor? Outdoor? Bright sunlight? really dark?
I got film off of Ebay, most ISO 100, and two rolls are ISO 50. Some websites are telling me that the lower the number is for darker conditions. Other websites are telling me the exact opposite! That the higher numbers are for brighter lighting and lower is best for brighter. If anyone can point me to a clear guide or give me a reliable answer I'd really appreciate it! thanks!
You have been visiting some very misinformed websites.
ISO is simply a measurement of the sensitivity to light of a light sensitive surface, whether film or digital sensor.
The LOWER the number (25, 50, 100) the LESS sensitive and the more light required.
The HIGHER the number (200, 400, 800) the MORE sensitive and the less light required.
There is, of course, a trade-off. A low ISO film will give us the sharpest, most grain-free negatives which are suitable for making big enlargements - 11x14, 16x20. A high ISO film will give us grainy negatives which are suitable for smaller enlargements such as 4x6 or 8x10.
So a low ISO like the film you bought (50, 100) is best-suited for use outdoors on a sunny day or with a flash if used indoors.
Although a very old rule, the "Sunny 16 Rule" is still a good one to know. It states: "On a sunny day, set your aperture to f16 and your shutter speed to 1/ISO." So if we're out today and its sunny and we're using ISO 100 we can shoot at f16 and 1/125 sec. If we were using ISO 50 on a sunny day we'd be at f16 and 1/60 sec.
(NOTE: This Rule was invented when shutters were mechanical and were set at 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000 sec. so we used the shutter speed closest to the ISO of our film. Modern shutters are electronically controlled and, essentially, step less).
If we want to photograph indoors without flash then we'll need a high ISO - 400, 800, 1600. As stated earlier we'll lose sharpness and have increased grain at these higher ISO's but at least we'll have the picture.
So if we're shooting on a sunny day and want the very best results we should be using ISO 50 or 100 and have our camera on a tripod.
