What does a camera filter do?

I am learning more about photography, but i don't know what a camera filter is or what is does.

There are only about three filters you will ever use on a digital SLR.

The first and perhaps the most important is the UV filter. It really just is there to protect the front element of your lens in two ways. First and perhaps the most practical, it keeps dust and finger prints from the front element of your lens. All modern lenses have sophisticated coatings on them to reduce lens flare and ghosting. The less you have to clean the lens itself, the less chance you have of marring those coatings. The other reason for having such a filter on your lens is for protection against catastrophic damages that can be caused when something outside your control strikes your lens. Here is what a UV filter did when protecting my lens, not to long ago.

Another filter you may want to invest in is a polarizing filter. It reduces reflections on reflective surfaces and is a favorite for those who shoot scenic shots with a lot of blue sky and interesting clouds. As long as the camera is facing 90 degrees to the suns arc, the sky will become intensely blue when you use this lens filter.

There is a third one, called an ND filter. ND stands for neutral density and is used then you want to increase the exposure of the shots and stopping the aperture down cannot give you the long shutter speed you may need to make water look like cotton or other special effects requiring longer that standard exposures under bright sun or even shade.

All the other filters that are available are specifically made for cameras using film. Digital cameras have what is called white balance and you can make corrections for differing light sources without needing to use a correction filter as you would if you were using film.
