I've got a Nikon D50, which unfortunately doesn't wirelessly control my SB-600 flash. I'd like to be able to move my flash around to experiment with different lighting angles.
I though I'd just buy a sync cable, either the SC-17 or SC-28. I'm guessing though these aren't going to get me quite what I hoped for, mainly because extending the cable is really going to pull on my tripods, and I'll have to really weigh them down to prevent any tipping over. I'll probably only be able to get about 5 feet, if that.
I know Nikon has a wireless commander you can attach to the camera, but at $200, I'd rather just buy a SB-800 at $300 to do it!
The flash units you mentioned also can be slaved using the IR output or the actual flash going off. Even the old SB-50DX will do this. Do some tests and see for yourself.
It sounds like you are shooting "studio" subjects ... you really don't need flash to do that ... some good 500w incandescent lights with umbrellas are much easier to adjust for the lighting you want and using the WB on your camera the colour will be fine.
