is a faster flash sync makes your external flash shoot faster? my sony a200 has only 1/160 flash sync..what does that number means?
The flash sync speed ultimately affects your photography in 2 ways. First, it's easier to understand why you have a max sync speed to tell you how it affects things.
Your camera has 2 shutters. A first shutter and a second one, they cover the same sensor. When your camera is waiting for you to take a shot, the first shutter is closed, the second open, no light hits the sensor yet. When you press the shutter release the sensor turns on, the first shutter opens (exposing the sensor), the second shutter closes, the sensor turns off, then the camera resets for the next shot. Your flash will trigger when the first shutter is completely open and not a nano second before. So your max x sync speed is when both shutters are open, exposing the entire sensors field of view to the light. When you go past that you will get dark banding because the second shutter (second curtain to use proper terminology) is already starting to close before the flash goes off.
So, this is the limiting factor that you have to deal with. Every photographer deals with it. Deal with it.
1) this affects how well your camera can overcome ambient. If your outside and you want to get creative and light up someones face yet your in bright sunlight, your flash will have to work extra hard to match the awesome power of the sun. But if your shutter speed is fast enough you can use a wider aperture and your flash wont have to work so hard to match or even overcome the suns power. Sunny 16 rule: in broad daylight set your shutter speed to 1/ISO, aperture f/16. So if your shooting at ISO 200 to get a proper exposure you would need to shoot at 1/200, f/16. If your trying to use a flash as well and your max x sync is 1/160 you will need to stop down even further making your flash work even harder. But if your at ISO 100 and your shooting at 1/160 then you can open up 2/3rds of a stop and save a little bit of flash batteries and recycle time.
2) since the x sync speed works off of the fastest that your shutters actually travel, going above that does little for stopping action.
There are cameras that can sync up to 1/200th or 1/250th, but honestly that's not buying you much speed. It's just a fact of what you can do, now that you know what the limitations are you know what you can do with it.
There are flashes that will sync faster than your max x sync, but they are more trickery than anything. They turn into a short duration constant light. In other words, they lengthen the time they emit light, but doing that loses a lot of power and it won't stop action any better.
