I'm looking into buying a lomography camera (holga) however it take 120 medium format film rather then 35mm. I know 35mm is more common, but what's the difference between the two?
Can you still get the 120 developed in most places like walmart, costco, etc that develop 35mm?
I am a huge fan of 120 film format cameras, but if you are new to film photography, I would recommend going with a 35mm film camera.
With 35mm film, you can get a 36 exposure roll for about the same cost as a roll of 120 film (12 or 16 exposures). Likewise, the cost of processing will be much more for the 120 film. With 35mm film, there are still many 1-hour labs that can process the film for you, and put scans of your images on a CD.
Using 35mm film will allow you to shoot many more photos. You will be free of the fear of wasting film, which can be a problem when making a few bad images is all part of learning about film photography. Bad shots are taken with digital cameras, but you never really notice them because all you have to do is delete the bad images.
There are several 35mm film cameras out there that will give you the lo-fi look of the Holga. Check out the Holga 135 (135 for just a lo-fi look, the 135BC if you want the vignetted corners like the Holga 120). There is also the Superheadz Black Slim Devil (a clone of one of my personal favorites, the Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim). There is also the brand new, just released Diana Mini, a small 35mm version of the Diana camera. The Diana Mini is unusual in that it can shoot 1/2 frame or a square image on a standard sized 35mm neg.
