I have hard round green algae in my saltwater tank, does anyone know what it is?
I have tried to find information on the net and can't find anything that matches this anoying algae. The closet thing I found is that it could be Diatom or Radiolaria. I scrape them all off the glass and they keep coming back. It grows on the fake plants and other items in the tank, but I don't remove those. Just the ones that are actually on the glass. How do I rid my tank of this so my view of the fish isn't obstructed. If anyone needs, I can take a picture and email it. It's a 46 gal. tank with a bi color blenny, royal gramma, 7 (some are)blue legged hermit crabs (others)are green legged. Along with live sand and live rocks. Please help me. Thanks.
It is probably an aggressive growth of diatom. Without a picture I cannot really tell, but the way it is growing, it has to be. There are many ways of dealing with this.
Algaes flourish under the following conditions: Availability of nutrients, and light.
1. What are your lighting requirements? If you use standard fl. bulbs then your light is towards the end of the specutrum that they like. Limit light to 6 hours a day and make sure your tank does not get any direct sunlight.If you use Compact Fl. Halides or VHO, your bulbs may be wearing out, replace them and maintain the 6 hours on, rest off cycle.
2. Feed your fish sparingly. This will limit the number of excess nutrients in your tank and also encourage your crabs to eat the algae. Hermits are opportunistic scavengers and if they have delicious fish food, they won't bother with yukky algae.
3. Consider getting a few Banded Trocus snails. They are beautiful, will not get eaten by your hermits and help keeping your aquarium free of algae.
4. Frequent partial water changes help enormously. I eventually got algae in my saltwater down by getting Phosbane (filter medium, put it in mesh bag and placed it in filter) because silicates and phosphates in your tankwater are like vitamins to these algae and cause them to flourish. Best is of course an RO unit, but not many of us can afford that!
5. Do you have a skimmer? If you do, don't capture dry foam but wet foam for the next couple of months. If you don't let me tell you Friend, it is the best thing to remove protein wastes that can cause unwanted algae growth. You don't even need to get a very expensive one- mine cost 25 bucks!
QUICKFIX. Cut out all light for a couple of days. If you don't have any coral, this will not harm your tank. Run filter, cover sides of tank so that no light reaches and cut out the light.
