As the question states, I am at a loss to explain how I would be able to accomplish what I'm planning. Thoughts the likes of putting some sort of ring around an L-Bracket have for some moments blundered in my head...however I am still at a loss. Perhaps I could use one of the points I am supposed to be threading a traditional strap through...But would they really be be strong enough?
Camera: Gripped D300s. The grip makes it just a little bit larger than a D3.

I would like to avoid having the D-Ring in the tripod mount so that I can make use of the vertical grip.
The R-Strap fits in the tripod mount. Nikon brand vertical grips do have a tripod mount location. I use R-straps whenever I shoot and love them. My D300 rides nicely in one (although I don't have a vertical grip). I have used them with my D1/DiH many times without any issues. BTW the only issue that I have had to date is training myself to be aware of the lens (larger lenses only) when I kneel down. If I don't have the camera in hand at the time it has a tendency to meet the ground.
Other people have done what you are suggesting here by putting a ring through the left strap d-ring of the camera. Take a look over a nikonians.org for more info.
