|
Help me suggest which SAT guide book to buy?
I'm planning to take SAT test in December this year. Any guide book that you can suggest? (e.g. Kaplan's, etc.) I'm taking SAT Maths and English only.
I have Gruber's Guide to the SAT. Most people haven't heard of it but it's actually a really good book. It's pretty expensive, but it covers everything, and when I say everything, I mean it. It has a long vocabulary list of the most common SAT words, it has really great Critical Reading practice with passages and strategies. For writing it has a review of verb/verb agreement, subject/verb agreement and everything the writing section tests (as well as help for the essay). And the math section has a detailed breakdown of the main parts covered in the SAT (geometry, algebra, arithmetic, etc.). And finally, it has 5 full length practice tests with answers and explanations. I feel like a salesperson here, but it is a great book if you're self motivated.
I also have McGraw-Hill's Critical Reading book which was fairly helpful, but most of what was in it is in my Gruber's book.
I know a few people who used the collegeboard book and it was pretty helpful but the math isn't very detailed as for what you need to know. I also know some people who took a Kaplan course which helped raise their scores around 200 points (but these are very expensive).
Lastly, I'm not sure if Princeton Review makes an SAT book, but they have a reputation for making their practice tests easier than the actual exam. I didn't believe this until I used their book for the ACT. I scored 3 points higher on all the practice tests in the book than I scored on the actual test. I could count 1 point for being nervous on the test date, but I don't think 3 points is accurate. So Princeton Review has good strategies but not good practice tests.
Overall, I highly recommend Gruber's because although it's not well known, it's a great book and it helped me enormously. Good luck!
