Hand Painted Backdrop 2
How to make a rear projection screen for a stage's digital backdrop?

Our school is planning a Michael Jackson tribute show to raise funds for a project out in Kenya. The only problem is, it costs too much to paint a back drop, and plus we need more than one. So our plan was to have a screen that covered the right hand side of the stage so that we could project a backdrop onto it. Obviously, this would have to be rear projection, otherwise it would be covered by the dancers/singers shadows. We've looked into buying a screen but the costs are simply unreasonable for a project of this size, therefore we were wondering whether we could make one ourselves. We don't want it to cost an absolute fortune, but we do have a little money to spend. Is there anyway that this could be done?

Use a material called muslin- its cheap a relatively easy to project onto if you have a decent projector. Just stretch it tight on some sort of pipe rigging. As far as the projector, depending on your stage it might be hard to get the projector back far enough to create a large image, if so, try aiming it into a large mirror that you can adjust the angle on. They make special rear- projection rigs for this, but like everything, their very expensive. You can easily build one yourself. Then just find a projector with the highest output (in lumens) you can afford/ borrow/ steal.
