What is the most affordable pro video camera that records onto memory cards not mini dv tapes?
I am interested in a SONY camera much like the Sony HVR-Z7U but I only have a price range of around $2500. I may also be interested in other brands like Canon, JVC and Panasonic but take into account my price range.
"Around" is a relative term, I am pretty much a Canon guy and the cheapest HD camcorder I would consider to replace or add to my GL-2 is the XF100 at $3300 retail. Start watching for used or factory reconditioned, they will hit e-Bay eventually. (Learn about and be careful of grey market). When I got my first GL-1 off of e-bay it looked brand new and never gave me any trouble (until I drowned it). A lot of people get these for a single event, wedding, special trip, etc. If you can be patient, this is the way to get the camera you specify in the price you want.
If you simply don't want to deal with tape, and can deal with a little extra bulk, consider getting a card based solid state video recorder and a good used GL or XL (or similar from other brands) type camera. The recorders are about $1000 and the cameras are (used) around $1000.
