What settings would you use for professional type pictures with a DSLR?
I recently got a Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D. I currently unfamilar with settings and such. I don't have a manual either. I would like to be able to take high quality pics of my kids for 16x20 size but I don't have lighting, just the built in flash. I like to take pictures indoors and outside but I can't afford a photography class and I just really want awsome pics of my kids without paying a fortune at a photo studio! Thank you for any help!
First off the 5D is a 6.1 MP camera. Getting 16x20 prints from that size sensor is possible but they wont be very sharp. You get sharp photos up to about 11x14. Not to say you cant go ahead and print 16x20, just to let you know it may not be real sharp. To get the most out of that camera for a large print, set the file size (or resolution) to the largest file size. Should be 3008 x 2000. If you're not familiar with taking control of Aperture and Shutter speed, set the mode dial to its portrait setting. This will tell the camera to use combinations of aperture and shutter speed typically used for portraits. The camera will do all the work here for you.
As far as lighting goes, pick a room with a big window or windows. Set your kids up near the window at a time of day where there is good light but no direct sun coming through. If you're going to shoot outside, stay out of direct sunlight. Look for areas of shade that are still bright.
