I need a little advice, a friend of mine is absolutely crazy about her new camera the Sony DSLR A200 and i know that for Christmas she wants anything to do with her camera that she can add to her camera bag, being a uni student i dont want to spend the earth but i want to be able to buy something to contribute to her collection . I have had a look at filters and lens hoods which all seem to be reasonable in price but dont know much about photography so dont know which would be the best to get for someone who is a beginner photographer? Any advice on suggestions for what i could buy her would be most appreciated. p.s. i live in the UK
Sony accessories tend to cost way too much, and I understand they are even more in the UK/EU.
Most Sony lenses actually come with the appropriate hood..
A filter set with a circular polarizer and UV filter and fluorescent color filter may be a good idea... although the only really useful one of the bunch is the CP. Even a good circular polarizer by itself would be good, if she doesn't have one.
The trouble with buying filters is getting the appropriate size. If she has the standard 18-70 kit lens, that would be 55mm. If she has something else, you'd need to make sure what the filter size is for that lens. Be aware that the larger the filter size, the higher the cost.
What else? A remote release cable.. great for use on a tripod. 50 quid won't buy a high-end tripod, but if she doesn't have one to begin with, a decent tripod is a very good thing to have.
A bag to put it all in? A 4Gb compact flash card? If she is new to photography in general, a book like "understanding exposure" by Brian Peterson?
The really good toys are well above your price point... but almost anything that adds to the kit is usually appreciated.
