I'm hoping there's something below $500 that I can invest in but there doesn't seem to be a lot of options. I do film making, usually on an HD prosumer camera. Int and Ext. Thanks
The last outdoor set I was on, they had about ten 2-Ks and a whole bunch of 1-K lamps as well as a few reflectors and scrims being used to modify the lighting. Night shots use a lot of lighting outdoors, so usually production companies just rent what they need each day. This is why blocking the shots prior to the shoot is so important.
You may want to visit one of the indoor sets at your favorite studio and just look at the way they light everything. Whether it is Fox, Sony, Burbank Studio's or Warner, the lighting or at least the kinds of lighting fixtures are pretty much the same.

While simple set ups can use only three or four less than 1K lamps, larger sets will require much more than $500 in lighting, reflectors and scrims.
The two portable Lowel Tota-lights I use cost just under $400 and included stands and umbrellas. They are small and very portable, but they only put out 750 watts each. Plenty for shooting inside a home, small studio or on location with a small set area, however they may fall short for the kind of light you may need for shooting your video
