I'm a newbie when it comes to analogue photography but I've recently gotten a full-out manual Pentax from a friend. I exposed one roll (about 5/24 pictures came out okay, the rest ranging from slightly to totally damaged), and I had to take one out 'prematurely' because the cranking lever was stuck, but all of its 14 pictures came out okay. Another roll came out perfectly fine and I received the last one of that sequence blank, but it could be that it was the one I accidentally 'broke' (by not pressing down the rewind button, rookie mistake!). I shot another entire roll yesterday to 'experiment' but it came back blank as well -- and I'm sure I didn't mess up because this time I was pressing down the rewind button and turning the knob with the arrow in the direction indicated.
I checked out some forums online and most people with the same problem believe it is the battery that isn't working, but the meter seems to be working just fine. What do you reckon?
I'm a little confused by your question. You say you had to "take one out" - are you talking about a roll or a frame? As far as I know they don't make 14-frame rolls of film (though they do make ones with 12 frames). Was the 5/24 pictures from a previous roll? If so, how did you know to press the rewind button with the first roll and not the second roll? Also, pressing the rewind button has nothing to do with whether your pictures are blank or not (it's to rewind the film, not expose it). You might try rewording your question for clarity in the future.
I'm not familiar with Pentax, but if the meter is working then that means the battery is not dead (otherwise the meter would not be working). Unless of course the meter is messed up and giving you the wrong exposure information. I'm assuming you are using the right kind of battery.
Normally I would say you have a light leak, but if some of your pictures turned out, then that is unlikely (otherwise none of your pictures would have turned out). I'm also assuming that you did not open the back of the camera until the film was completely rewound.
The only thing I can think of is that you did not load the film properly into the take-up spool, so that all the time you thought you were taking pictures and advancing the film, the film was just sitting there. Since you don't open the back until after you rewind the film, you would never know until you got your pictures back from the developer (this happened to me once on an automatic camera).
If that was the case, then in the future, after you load the film (or think you load the film), don't close the back until you snap the shutter a few times and advance the lever. You will then see if the film is properly attached to the take-up spool. Only then should you close the back.
