I'm looking for a bike for daily commute but have a few requirements and limited funds. I want a light bike (lots of stock carbon if possible), looking for disc breaks, multi-speed and aggressive look. I would love to get it all for around $1000. Been looking at Giant, Trek, Cannondale, Bianchi and Specialized. What model do you suggest? Other quality brand? Other route like building my self and if so what components that equal that amount. Contrary to what John M has stated - some road bikes do use disc brakes (not breaks). Mine has them...but it is a heavy steel framed "touring" road bike. Link below. Cost - $1,200.
Building your own bike from the ground up is a waste of $$$. Bicycle companies buy in huge quantities & get huge discounts. You - as an individual, will not. You will end up paying 2 to 3 times as much vs. just buying one already assembled.
If you are mechanically inclined & can assemble one yourself - take a look at Bikes Direct on the web. No sales tax - except in Texas & free UPS shipping. Same components that go into a "bike shop bike" except the brand names are different - Motobecane, Gravity, Dawes, Windsor & a few from Schwinn. 2nd link below. $1,000 will get a hell-of-a bicycle from these folks.
