When it comes to DSLR cameras, would you go with Nikon or Canon? What are the first things you'd look for?
Which brand usually does a better job? I know it all depends on the camera model, the lenses, the creativity of the photographer, etc. but what are the advantages of Canon over Nikon and what are the advantages of Nikon over Canon?
Currently Nikon seems to have the edge, with the D3100, D5100 and D7000 each besting their Canon counterparts. That being said, the difference is miniscule, and these two brands tend to leapfrog each other every few years. So if things do as they did in the past, Canon will take the lead in two years from now again.
Both make excellent cameras that will exceed your abilities as a photographer for years to come. Since you'll not just buying a camera but basically starting a camera system with multiple lenses, flash units etc, it would be wise not necessarily to get the one that makes slightly better cameras today, but the system that you're more comfortable with in general. Also, Canon tend to be a bit cheaper than Nikon when it comes to high quality lenses.
Add Pentax to the list of brands that you consider. Pentax makes fine cameras and sells them at excellent prices, and the lenses are very affordable (affordable does not equal cheap).
