DSLR Popularity Canon and Nikon and other Brands...?
Why does the Canon and Nikon dominated the market...how about Pentax, Sony, Olympus and other brands...why do they stand out among the rest...
"It's not the wand, it's the magician..." That's the first thing to learn about picking a camera. That said, I disagree with the notion that Canon and Nikon stand out soley due to advertising. Sony has spent millions more than either Canon or Nikon in recent years and in spite of getting a huge head start from acquiring assets from Konica-Minolta, Sony is still at best, a distant third in the market. Before Sony got into the game, Pentax had third place solidly wrapped up because they've always had a simple product line that works well. At the consumer level, they are easily as good as Canon or Nikon and the entry price is slightly lower (though not by much).
Another major factor is that Canon and Nikon have longer histories among the major manufacturers. Only Pentax has been in business as long as either of Canon or Nikon with respect to photography. But Canon and Nikon were major innovators in the 1980s and 1990s. They targeted the professional market building faster, stronger and more reliable cameras and lenses with features that still aren't found on other cameras. Because Canon and Nikon are used by professionals, people who ask pros for advice will get referals for those cameras more than any other brand. And of course people who want to emulate professionals will often choose the same equipment or at least cheaper versions of the same equipment. In the case of cameras, if you know you'll eventually turn pro, it makes a great deal of sense to choose Canon or Nikon because they also have greater aftermarket support for lenses and accessories than any other brand.
