TLC Cake Boss watchers/ cake makers help?...?
I want to make a cake for my grandma's birthday. On TLC's Cake Boss there was an episode where he made two lobsters on top of a pot with clam shells. I want the top of the cake to look like a beach. How do i make seashells like he made clam shells. It did not show how he made them, or I just missed that part of the show. Preferrably if you can eat the shells. I'm going to cover the top with gram cracker crumbs to look like sand, any other ideas on how to make half look like sand and half look like water coming in? Also, does anyone know what that covering he puts on top of the cakes it looks like hard icing like dough that you can cut easily but it stays together, sorry if I dont describe it right.( on the episode with the lobsters he put it through a machine to mix red orange and yellow for the flames) What is that stuff and how would I make/get that? Thanks!
I saw the episode. He uses fondant to cover the cake, and for some of the cute things that go on the cake. I was assuming he had a mold for some of the items. Those shells were too perfect to have been done by hand. I have some old baking dishes that are scallop shaped and sized. They would make a great mold. Check your local cake decorating store or Hobby shop to check for molds, or even an actual scallop shell.
He used brown sugar for the sand. And the sorry, I get my cake shows confused. I have seen tinted frosting used for the waves, and I have seen Ace of Cakes use sugar [cooked sugar] for water. Frosting would be the easy way, make it fairly stiff, tint it after it's made. Don't stir it in 100% leave some streaks, and it will look like sea water really does. Take the back of a spoon to make the waves.
