How much should parts and labor cost to replace the front brake pads and rotors on a 2005 Chevy Malibu 4 cyl?
The local shop quoted 486.45. I looked up the cost of parts and its about 110. This labor charge seems a bit high.
That's a pretty high quote, but the prices you found for parts is pretty low too. Two rotors and pads for $110? Sounds like you went with cheap-o pads and super thin rotors. Brake pads are definitely something you get what you pay for. Those cheap pads that claim they last forever are cheap b/c they are hard as bricks. Do you want your pads to wear, or your rotors? Something is going to wear down and its better to pony up for better pads so you never have to replace rotors again.
I would ask for a breakdown of how much is parts and how much is labor. Did you ask if they could "turn" the rotors? That will cut down on your parts cost.
I change all that stuff myself, so I only have to pay for parts. I'm pretty slow, so it takes me about 80 minutes to change both sets of front pads. Plenty of videos on youtube showing you how to do it.
