What type of photography background do you prefer to use? Example: Muslin, Paper and so on...
Please list why you prefer to use these types of backgrounds, approximately the average cost of each and where you purchase them at.
I am doing this for a photography research paper. Thanks ahead of time for your input if you decide to help me out.
Muslin, paper & vinyl are the principle types to hang on background stands. I have used all 3.
Paper - advantages - cheap, comes in lots of colours (although its possible to gel the flash & turn a grey b/g any colour, so this isn't necessarily an advantage). Smooth surface.
- disadvantages - can be heavy for full width b/g. Single use only as it gets dirty & you tear off & throw away used sections. Has to be stored upright when not on the bar, as its own weight can compress the roll & cause a regular crease along it.
Muslin - advantages - lightweight & reusable (can be washed). Easy to store folded up.
- disadvantage - has wrinkles. These can be ironed out with a garment steamer when its hung, or can be blurred out with suitable use of depth of field.
Vinyl - advantages - very smooth & slightly shiny surface. Can be wiped clean.
- disadvantage - heaviest of the three. Like paper, rolls need to be stored upright when not on the bar.
The costs of each vary according to size (std width is around 3m, but you can get half width sizes). Length depends on how much you want in front of the b/g. Short b/g are only about 4m long (ie they just about hang from the stand), Others can be 9m or longer & come out in front quite a way.
