a question about pinch harmonics?
I have a Kirk Hammett model ESP. The $500 one.
I actually noticed that I got better pinch harmonics with my low level Epiphone. I wrote a song with that, and try as hard as I can, I can't get my ESP to perform some of the pinches. I've got pinch harmonics down - I know the technique front and back, but for some reason can't get the same pinches on the two guitars.
I see great artists like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani do amazing pinch tricks, using whammy bar and such, which I sorta wish I could do. I'm not trying to be exactly like them, because lets face it thats impossible. But I guess my question is, do what sort of guitars have the best harmonics? Is it possible to upgrade my pickups or something, so that I can get more out of them?
There are a few things to do to get really good squeals. Pickups are definitely one thing, a hotter pickup will typically give you better squeels. I don't think strings really factor into the equation with guage, however a new set of strings should give you best results. Distortion is another factor, you need to really turn it up to make some harmonics start coming out.
Keep in mind that some guitars have different scales, especially if you are used to playing a guitar with 22 frets and now you are playing one with 24, or vice versa.
Use new strings and turn up the distortion, thats your easiest and cheapest fix. You may need to raise the levels of the pickups as well, just don't overdo it.
