I'm on a very tight budget but I don't want anything that will degrade my photos. I definitely want a polarizer (for the bluer skies, decrease of refections), but should I also get a UV filter? I have read that they degrade photos a lot unless you get an expensive one. I am already getting a lens hood. Don't they sort of do the same thing as UV filters in a way? The florescent filters seem pretty useless bc cameras have auto white balance. Maybe I'm wrong. I also know I want it to be circular, not linear. In case anyone is wondering. I have a Canon & an 18-135 lens. Thanks!
A good lenshood is important but a UV filter, in addition to adding physical protection to the front of your lens also does filter out ultraviolet light which can add an unwanted bluish cast to your photos, it may be less important on digital cameras, I believe that a lot of sensors are filter for both infrared and UV, but some more than others, the only way you will know how important it is to your work is to try one and see (it's a pretty cheap investment). And definitely a circular polarizer--older and now cheaper linear polarizers can play hobb with AF and metering systems in cameras (and not just digitals). Even my ancient F-1 has metering issues with linear polarizers. Go with a good brand name filter, Hoya, Tiffen, B+W, etc. One case where you get what you pay for. And that lens hood? If your lens maker offers a hood get the hood that matches your lens.
Oh, and most of the time, if you decide to mount the polarizer take off the UV filter first.
