Protect Lens

How can I protect my Camera,lens and equipments if I have to shoot in a bad weather conditions?
I just start working as a freelance photographer and I have to go for shooting assignments no matter the weather condition.Also I really like to do nature photography.
Is it there something that I can buy or home made make to protect my camera and equipments from the humanity,rain,snow,sand and salt from the ocean,sandy wind from the desert etc??

I usually use just an umbrella or a trash bag when is raining like today , but I'm not sure that is enough protection.
Use a rain poncho, they're small and easy to carry. They cover you, your vest, bag, etc., and you can pull the hood out over the camera as needed. Plus, you have a dry environment inside it to change lenses, cards, film, whatever. The rip-stop nylon military type are the best.
