Help with a film camera please?
Hi, I have a Canon AE-1 Program and I use 35mm film. I recently finished a roll, and i realize that you must push the rewind button and then rewind the film to get it out successfully. however, my film is completely detached from the uh..film holder on the left. Is that roll completely ruined? or is there a way I can save it? Thanks!
Don't worry, these things happen! And now that you know, you won't make the same mistake again.
If you have not opened the back of the camera in light, the shots are safe. If you opened it up only briefly, like 1 second or less, many of the shots will be "funky" but not ruined.
The "film holder" is called the take-up spool or reel. In the future, if you feel that you have to force a camera (or any mechanical device) to work, something is probably wrong and you should stop.
Anyway, what you need to do is either take the camera to a good lab (a professional or semi-professional would be best, not Target or the like) and ask them to remove the film from the camera, put it in a new canister and process it.
If you can't find a lab to do this for you or you are simply interested in learning/doing it yourself, you will need to buy two things:
--film changing bag (it's a good idea to have one of these anyway but it's not absolutely necessary if you have a room in your house with no windows.)

--bulk load canisters
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/86475-REG/General_Brand_NP11137_1_35mm_Cassette_For_Bulk.html
Okay, now that you have your supplies, take a test roll of cheap film and a bulk load canister and practice removing the film from the test roll and loading it into the bulk load canister. i would simply pull the leader of the test roll all the way out of the can (keep it rolled or you'll have 5 feet of film going all over the place!) and then open the bulk load canister, insert the end if the film into the canister and roll it up inside there. Practice this in the light. Look online for detailed instructions if you have issues. Once you can do it in the light, you'll have to do it in the dark with the roll you are trying to save!
Take the camera and a bulk load canister and put them inside the second zipper pocket of the changing bag and go inside a windowless room with the door shut and lights off. If you opted to not buy a changing bag, you can stuff towels under the door of the windowless room (usually a bathroom) to seal out the light. Do this as far away from the door as possible and with your back to it. The idea is not to let light touch the film.
Next, open the camera and transfer the film to the canister. Your film is safe now! You will want to mark the speed of the film on the canister.
Now, here's the catch. Is the film traditional, non c41 process b&w? or is it colour or c41 process b&w? (I'm assuming it's n ot e6 slide film but if it is, the instructions below for c41 are the same) If it is b&w, you can take it to your pro or semi-pro lab or process it yourself. If it is colour, you're going to have an issue finding someone to process it. Call different pro and semi pro labs and tell them the situation and ask if they will process it or know a lab that will.
The problem is that c41 colour film has a code marked on the original canister that tells the processing machine what speed the film is and therefore how long to process it. Your new canister will not have this code so the machine will have to be manually overrode and not everyone will be able/willing to do this but I think if you call around enough you'll find someone who will.
Good luck and I hope things work out! It's a big pain in the butt but also a good learning experience.
