I know how to work the camera itself because I took a beginners course in photography, but didn't learn much about lenses and lens sizes.
I have the standard lens that came with my nikon d5000. the size on the barrel following the circle with a slash through it is 52mm. I'm guessing that's the size?
Well, I'm trying to find a lens hood for my camera. I found one on eBay (and i have no problem with shopping on eBay) with the listing title: "52mm 52 mm Rubber Lens Hood transfer Standard Wide Tele"

I messaged the seller and he replied by saying something about it not fitting any lens wider than 28mm but it says nothing about 28mm on the page.
I am so confused. Help?
What you found on your lens is the mark for the screw on filter size, of 52mm. Your lens, (I'm guessing 18-55 f/3.5-5.6) will accept any screw-on filter or attachment of that size. In the case of a rubber hood, the issue is whether or not the hood will block a portion of the view when the lens is at it's widest point. Most likely not, as the field of view on your lens is 27mm. You may lose a small portion of the corners, but the only way to know for sure is to put it on the lens and see what happens.
There are also adjustable rubber hoods, that can be pulled in and out to avoid this problem.
