i just bought a complete studio set but not sure how to set it up right.this is what i got Reflekz 320 two head kit 160 watts,2 Softboxes 28" X 20", 1 4 Leaf barn door set and 1 1-Light 250-watt Mini Boom Hair Light. i got one softbox set up on one light and did the barn doors on the other i left the other soft box off? so what do i do please help me????
I'm not a lighting pro, only picked up pointers from them.
Basically, lighting is more than just lighting up the front of someone for pictures or video. You need gentler back lighting behind them to eliminate shadows on the backdrop. Rather than a single light directly on the subject, creating a glare, two lights at oblique angles provides softer, yet brighter light without reflective glare. A downlight toward the head, as well as an uplight to eliminate shadows under the chin, will even out the overall lighting effect.
The barn doors can be adjusted depending on the purpose of the backdrop. If it's part of the scenery, it also needs to be evenly lit. But if it's more of an insignificant area, say like a standup comic, then closing down the barn doors will concentrate the light on your subject without completely darkening the backdrop, which would look like someone standing in front of a black hole.
There is much, much more, but that is a beginner's start. I don't know where to send you for more professional advice as some are tight-fisted about sharing knowledge while others are happy to talk shop. But you should be able to find a decent book on the subject at Barnes & Noble for around $20 or so.
