Those black cars on upcoming models?
You know when they are about to release a new model of a car, for example a new BMW, you see all kinds of 'spy' photos appearing on the net, where the new concept car is made to look really really ugly (in black, with bits and bobs plastered to it to hide key features) and they are driving these on a motorway or through a high street - why do they do this? The only thing I can think of is that they are trying to tease you and get interested before the car goes into mass production and into the showrooms - but they look ugly so I am confused! What other reason can there be? Some sort of testing perhaps?
Cars go through a lot of testing before being released for sale. A lot takes place in test labs or at proving grounds, but some testing occurs on the public roads. There are three main reasons: some road conditions are impossible to replicate in any other way; the cost of proving-ground time is expensive, so by avoiding it the manufacturers can reduce expenditure, and so keep their new cars affordable; sometimes a quick check-test is required, and it is quicker and easier to drive the car out of the development centre gates than ship it to the proving ground.
Typical tests run on pubic roads are:
Cold climate tests (usually in Scandinavia, northern Canada or Alaska)
Hot climate tests (usually in Arizona, south America, north Africa or Australian outback)
Comparison tests with existing models and/or competitor vehicles
Mileage accumulation (particularly to ensure the emissions control system lasts for the legally-required mileage)
Ride and handling assessment on normal roads
The cars are covered to hide the main styling features, so that when the car is finally launched the styling looks fresh to the press and public.
Cars used for climate tests will usually be painted black, as this causes the greatest thermal loads. Cars used for structural tests will usually be painted white, so that paint cracks caused by flexing of the structure will be clearly visible to the test engineers.
