What studio lighting kit should I get?
Does anyone have any suggestions as to a studio lighting kit I should buy. I would prefer one that also contained a white backdrop.... also preferably $150 or under.
You have to decide if you want stobe type lighting or continuous style lights. They are two vastly different methods of working. The continuous lights are easiest for someone new as they are a "what you see is what you get" type of light.
Then with strobe lighting, you need to decide if you want monolights in which the power supply is built into the head and must be used with an AC outlet, or if you want a separate battery power pack / head style unit that can be taken on location.
At $150 you are not going to get much. Here is a decent continuous light using daylight balanced fluorescent bulbs. (These are NOT the same bulbs you buy in the local department store).

This can give you a start if you place the light creatively and possibly use a reflector opposite the light to help with shadow fill in.
As for the white backdrop. Sorry to disappoint you, but a white backdrop is NOT going to be white in your photo, especially using the above light. For a white backdrop to be pure white requires powerful lighting on the backdrop itself. This light must be about 2 stops over the correct exposure for your subject. You are not going to get anywhere near approaching this type of light equipment at your price point.
I suggest you go to a fabric shop and get a large piece of neutral grey material to get you started. It goes with anything and is pretty good about absorbing shadow.
My number one suggestion to you is to do some studying about studio lighting online and with books. There is also a huge amount of video tutorials on studio light on You Tube. You really need to have a better idea of what you need and want before spending a dime on anything.
Also, as stated above. You can buy cheap, but you will just be spending more money later for the quality you should have bought in the first place.
