Need help understanding Camera Lenses?
I was hoping that someone might be able to put into simple terms what an "AL" Lens is ? I have an older Praktica MTL-5 35mm with 3 M42 Mount lenses and would like to bring them over to A DSLR camera body with the aid of a Bayonet to M42 converter adaptor. They are A Vivitar 75-205mm zoom, Pentacon 108mm Telephoto, and a Penticon 50mm, and of course a Sologor 2X tele-converter. I would prefer to go with Nikon, but I think the chart says Manual focus "AL" lenses are not compatible, where other types are... Could someone please explain to me what this is ? or have any other suggestions on what DSLR Camera it could go with ?
The M42 mount is a screw-mount. You can buy an M42 to Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Canon or Nikon adapter.
Since there will be no communication between lens and camera you'll have to manually focus and use stop-down metering or an external hand-held meter.
Since the mid to late 1960's camera manufacturers have used meter-coupled lenses. This is a feature that allows the lens to remain wide-open while composing your picture regardless of what f-stop you select. Suppose you select f16. A connection between camera and lens "tells" the meter to meter for f16 even though the lens appears wide-open. When you depress the shutter release the connection between camera and lens closes the lens down to f16.
Without any such connection between camera and lens when you stop-down to f16 your viewfinder will be very dark. So you have to compose wide-open and then stop-down to the aperture you want to use, meter, set the shutter speed and then take the picture. Stop-down metering is slow and clumsy to say the least.
