I just started photography school and I was wanting to see if anyone had any ideas for a self portrait assignment that we have to do the last week of class. It has to be a self portrait and the catch is that we can't use a remote or timer on the camera to take the picture. We have to be the one that takes the picture too. The only thing I can think of is using water, glass or a mirror to take it but that doesn't seem very creative to me. Anyone have any ideas? Could I use an ND filter with a long shutter and pose quickly in front of the lens after I take the shot? I appreciate any help I can get.
Another option is to set up in a very dark location... say, the country at night.... set the camera for a long exposure (possibly one minute) and a middle aperture (like 5.6 or 8). Put the camera on a tripod (very sturdy one) and hand-hold a flash. If your flash has a power setting, (most automatic ones do) try to set it for the setting that applies to your aperture that you've set on the camera. Then walk somewhere in the frame and 'pop' the flash so that it lights you.... then walk to an other location and do it again.... You'll have multiple 'you' in the frame.... Basically, if it's dark enough you will only see the places where you lit yourself with the flash... digital makes this easier because you can immediately review your results, but it's still possible on film.
