What is wrong with my computer and video camera?

I have a Sony Digital Handycam (Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar & and its DCR-TRV17) and I keep trying to upload a video that I made on it onto my Microsoft Windows Vista, but anywhere that I plug the USB cord into it doesn't work. My computer just says that it can't find any video camera. I just don't get what I am doing wrong.
I also don't speak computer terms so I don't know what firewire is, all I know is that it is a USB cord intended for Windows 1998 or 2000

OK, with no "computer terms":
YOU NEED TO USE WHAT SONY CALLS AN "I.LINK" CABLE. It plugs into the jack marked "DV in/out" on the camcorder.

The Sony DCR-TRV17 model camcorder uses the USB cable to get files from a Memory Stick in the camera (only). You would normally just put still pictures on that, but your model can also record MPEG movies on it if you set it to (which is a nice feature).

But usually, you will be recording videos to a mini-DV videotape, not a Memory Stick. To get the video from the mini-DV tape, you must use an i.Link cable.

Sony did NOT supply this cable along with this camcorder (only the USB cable). They would like to sell you a genuine Sony brand cable, which IMHO is extremely overpriced. Here are alternatives:

If you are using a desktop computer, you will need the 4-pin to 6-pin cable. Here's a link to about the lowest price you can get for a 6-foot length cable (and there's a good picture of it to help you buy it elsewhere, too): http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1885

If you would rather buy that from a "brick and mortar" store, Walmart has the best price (Best Buy BTW is probably the "worst buy" for cables):

FYI:
This cable, and its port, are officially called "IEEE-1394."
Sony named it (and promotes calling it) "i.Link"
Apple named it (and promotes calling it) "FireWire"
-- and -- FireWire is really the most common name for it (probably because Apple has made it free to use the trademark "FireWire" as long as you meet the specs; and Sony, I believe, charges a license fee for the trademark "i.Link").
